HomeBlogDodge, Chrysler, and RAM Key Programming for Western North Carolina Drivers

RAM trucks have become a common sight on job sites and farms throughout Western North Carolina, and Dodge and Chrysler vehicles, sharing much of the same underlying technology, make up a steady share of what we work on at our Asheville shop. If you’ve lost a key or fob for one of these vehicles, here’s what to expect.

Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM share a lot of common architecture under what’s now the Stellantis umbrella, which means their key and immobilizer systems tend to follow similar patterns across the three brands. Older models, generally those from before the mid 2000s, often use a standard transponder key with an embedded chip that communicates with the vehicle’s security system.

Newer RAM trucks, along with current Charger, Challenger, and Pacifica models, frequently use a proximity smart key fob that the vehicle detects wirelessly, allowing for push button starting without inserting anything. Some RAM trims also include a separate keypad entry option mounted on the door, similar in concept to systems offered by other truck manufacturers, which can be a useful backup if a fob ever goes missing.

What Programming Looks Like

For transponder and smart key equipped vehicles across these three brands, programming generally requires the vehicle to be present so we can communicate directly with its onboard systems. Bringing an existing working key, if you have one, typically speeds up the process.

If every key has been lost, we can usually still help, though the process takes longer and may involve working through the vehicle’s diagnostic port to register a new key entirely from scratch.

A Note on RAM Truck Security Systems

Some RAM models use a more involved security and immobilizer setup than is typical for the segment, particularly on certain configurations and model years. This can occasionally mean the programming process for a lost key takes a bit longer than it would on a more straightforward vehicle, since additional steps may be required to properly authorize a new key with the truck’s security system. We’ll let you know upfront if your specific RAM falls into this category so there are no surprises about timeline.

Why an Independent Locksmith Often Makes Sense

Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM dealerships can handle key replacement, but you’re working within their service department’s scheduling and standard pricing. For a work truck especially, waiting on a dealership appointment can mean a day or more without a vehicle you depend on for your livelihood. We specialize specifically in key and lock services, which usually means faster turnaround and lower overall cost for the same outcome.

Models We Work With Most

RAM 1500 and heavier duty truck owners make up a large share of our calls for this group of brands, often needing a spare key made quickly to avoid downtime on a work vehicle. Charger and Challenger owners come in regularly as well, frequently for smart key replacement. Pacifica and Grand Caravan owners, often managing a packed family schedule, appreciate the convenience of same day spare key service rather than waiting on a dealership slot.

Get a Spare Key Before You Need One

If your Dodge, Chrysler, or RAM vehicle only has one working key right now, getting a spare made is a simple step that avoids a much bigger inconvenience later. This matters especially for trucks used daily for work, where being without the vehicle for even a single day represents a real cost.
